Waterstop Strip, Waterstop and Metal Waterstop Characteristics

Waterstop strip, waterstop and metal waterstop are widely used in various construction projects with waterproof demands. However, many people are wondered how to choose waterproof products that can perfectly meet their waterproof demands. Here we’d like to briefly introduce their differences to help your know these waterproof products better.

  • Waterstop Strip

    • Raw Material: Macromolecule inorganic water absorption materials, rubber and additives.

    • Principle of Waterproof: It expanses after exposing to water and fills the concrete gap, so as to achieve the waterproof effect.

    • Benefits: Convenient construction and low price.

    • Shortcomings: It is likely to expand after exposing to water and cannot be stored for a long time. The waterproof effect of waterstop strip is not as good as that of waterstop and metal waterstop.

    • Scope of Application: It is commonly used in building parts with lower waterproof requirements, such as basement exterior walls, foundation rafts, to prevent capillary water in the soil.

    • Improper Applications: It cannot be used on the roof of underground garage with covering or planting soils.

    • Standard Size (mm): 20 × 30, 50 × 50.

  • Waterstop

    • Raw Material: Plastic, rubber.

    • Principle of Waterproof: It is partially or completely buried in the concrete during the concrete pouring process to prevent water seepage.

    • Benefits: High elasticity, excellent wear resistance, great tensile resistance, good waterproof performance and strong adaptability to deformation.

    • Shortcomings: Plastic and rubber waterstops are easy to be punctured; rubber waterstops are prone to aging after long time use.

    • Scope of Application: Suitable for construction joints, deformation joints and settlement joints with large deformation.

    • Standard Size (mm): 300 × 6, 300 × 8, 300 × 10, 350 × 8, 400 × 10

  • Metal Waterstop

    • Material: Stainless steel, galvanized and copper.

    • Principle of Waterproof: After adding a metal waterstop, when water penetrates along the gap between the new and old concrete contact parts and encounter the metal waterstop, it will not seep into the gap. Besides, the metal waterstop has a certain width, which extends the water penetration path and achieve great waterproof effect.

    • Benefits: The connection part of metal waterstop must be fully welded to achieve great waterproof effect.

    • Shortcomings: High cost and slow construction progress.

    • Scope of Application: Suitable for horizontal and vertical construction joints buried below the groundwater level and buildings constructed above groundwater, such as pools, etc.

    • Standard Size (mm): 200 × 2, 200 × 3, 300 × 2, 300 × 3, 350 × 2, 350 × 3, 400 × 4, 450 × 4.

In short, waterstop strip is commonly used in in building parts with lower waterproof requirements; waterstop has high elasticity and is widely used in constructions with large settlement deformation; metal waterstop construction is relatively complex and is not suitable for constructions with large deformations, and is widely used in horizontal and vertical construction joints buried below the groundwater level.
